Who Should Perform the Botox® Procedure?

Though the laws vary from state to state, and some states allow more flexibility when it comes to determine who can legally perform Botox treatments, Botox procedures should only be administered by Board Certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons who have received such training as a part of their medical education. Botox should not be administered by nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical assistants, or other medical specialties that do not encompass aesthetic medicine like dermatology and plastic surgery do.

Where can Botox® be used?

The uses of Botox are growing and expanding every day. In dermatology, we use it to treat the lines of facial expression that contribute to wrinkles like; crows feet, frown lines, forehead lines, lines around the mouth, and lines on the chin and neck.

Botox and Dysport are approved for use in the area of the face called the glabella, which is the area between the eye brows. This area is also responsible for frown lines.  Botox®Cosmetic has been FDA approved and found to be both safe and effective.

Botox is used widely in the crows feet area or the area around the eyes where lines form on the forehead.  Some doctors are even starting to use it more on the lower face, particularly on the lines around the mouth, or on the upper lip to prevent a gummy smile.  A gummy smile means that too much gum shows at full smile. Botox can also be used on the chin to smooth out lines that form there as well. It can be used in the neck to help ease some of the wrinkles and creases that are formed by over- use of that muscle. These are just the dermatologic and cosmetic uses of Botox. It can also be used for migraine headaches, for twitching eye lids, or for other neuromuscular disorders like torticollis.
