We are living longer than our ancestors did. Even though our bodies may feel more energetic as we get older, they will begin to show signs of aging at some point. The Skin Wellness Center of Alabama has solutions for men and women that let you be in control of your aging process when it comes to your skin.
One of the most common ways in which the skin can look as vibrant as you feel is with targeted botulinum injections. Botulinum toxin is known more commonly as Botox®. Xeomin and Dysport are other brands of the same product.
These FDA–approved anti-aging treatments are ideal in the treatment of:
- Crow’s feet
- Frown lines on the forehead
- Furrows between the brows
- Platysmal bands on the neck
There are 43 muscles at work on the face, allowing us to chew, smile, speak, laugh, frown, and communicate every emotion. As these muscles are consistently worked, they become toned beneath the skin, and wrinkles form above them. Lines and wrinkles on the face may make you appear older, tired, and even angry when you are not. By applying Botulinum to the tensed muscles in order to relax them, we are able to smooth the skin safely and effectively, for a calmer, more youthful appearance.
This form of treatment addresses one part of the problem of facial wrinkles, the muscles beneath the skin. In many cases, relaxing the muscles is sufficient for optimal results. For wrinkles that are deeper, more resistant, or in certain locations, our medical professionals may recommend complementing this treatment with a suitable dermal filler for a non-invasive face-lifting effect.
The effects of Botox®, Xeomin and Dysport can last up to eight months, and can be repeated as often as necessary to maintain the improved appearance. Through the years, research has shown that these products can be used for other purposes such as treatment of excessive sweating, prevention of migraines, relaxation of twitching eyes, and in patients with spastic muscles.
Botox®, Xeomin, and Dysport treatments can typically be done in less than 20 minutes and there is virtually no down time. Patients may expect to be slightly red in the treated areas for an hour or two after the injections. Though it is rare, occasionally, slight bruising may occur as well. This effect is easily treated with cold ice packs. Most patients are able to return to work or other activities with no one able to tell that the procedure has been done. While the immediate appearance is not altered, neither is the desired effect immediately evident. It takes approximately seven to 14 days for the medication to become completely active.
Treating the skin for wrinkles is easier than ever. We are able to accomplish astonishing results with just a few injections. This is possible not only because of the quality of substances administered, but also because of the extent of skill behind each injection. Dr. Corey Hartman and Dr. Rayna Dyck are Board Certified dermatologists with years of specific training and experience in treating the skin to perfection.
When you receive cosmetic treatment at Skin Wellness Center of Alabama, you benefit from a high standard of care that improves your skin, and your confidence along with it. Contact us today for your consultation.Read more about Botox® in our Learn section>
Chemical peels are an underutilized, often misunderstood dermatologic treatment. A chemical peel is the application of a chemical substance directly to the skin that causes rapid skin cell turnover. This turnover is evident as peeling and scaling for days after the procedure is performed. The goals of chemical peels are as varied as the products used in the chemical peel procedure.
Chemical peels are generally classified by their depth of penetration and can be divided into superficial, medium depth, and deep peels. Superficial peels penetrate to or through the very top layer of skin and offer surface improvements with minimal downtime. Sunspots, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, acne, and sun damage can be treated and improved cosmetically through the use of chemical peels. Since their improvement is gradual, best results are achieved after a series of treatments. Known as lunchtime peels, superficial chemical peels work well to quickly improve the texture, tone, and overall appearance of the skin with minimal interruption to one's life.
Medium depth chemical peels are used to treat deeper lines, more persistent color irregularities, and to remodel collagen that can improve the appearance of acne scarring. The discomfort may be greater than that associated with superficial chemical peels, but the rewards are also greater. The results are long lasting as well. Depending upon the damage that the peel seeks to correct, a series of peels are sometimes necessary for medium depth chemical peels. The downtime is somewhat longer for these peels as well.
Deep chemical peels are falling out of favor as many laser devices are now much more efficient at resurfacing the skin. Laser are also a better choice too because they do not require the general anesthesia that traditionally accompanied deep peels.
At Skin Wellness Center of Alabama, our medical professionals provide a detailed consultation with each patient prior to the procedure to get a sense of exactly what he or she would like to improve about their skin's color, tone, and texture. From there the appropriate peeling agent is selected with respect to skin type, risks, and benefits. Some of the peels performed at the office are: Illuminize, Vitalize, Rejuvenize, Salicylic acid, Jessner's solution, Trichloroacetic acid, V.I Peel, and Obagi's Blue Peel.Read more about Chemical Peels in our Learn section>
Also called fillers, soft tissue fillers, or soft tissue augmentation, dermal fillers restore our skin’s youthful fullness that is lost as we age. Dr. Corey Hartman, who is a Board Certified Dermatologist, and his team at Skin Wellness Center of Alabama, offer a number of different fillers to reduce aging signs on the face, lips, and hands. With our wide selection, we can:
- Rejuvenate facial contours by restoring volume to the cheeks, hollows under the eyes, and deep folds.
- Reduce the appearance of scars.
- Eliminate fine lines
- Add fullness to the lips.
- Lift a downturned mouth or lift the brows.
- Restore a more youthful appearance to the hands.
Restylane, Perlane, Juvéderm, and Belotero are composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the human body. It is found in high concentrations in our joints and connective tissues, acting as a network to carry nutrients to our skin cells. When injected, the gel adds volume to the tissues and facial structures and draws water to the skin’s surface, keeping it looking supple and fresh.
Restylane – Adds fullness and volume to the skin to improve moderate to deep facial folds and wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds, which are the lines running from the sides of your nose to the corners of your mouth. It is also excellent for adding definition and fullness to lips, providing lasting results after just one treatment.
Perlane – The larger particles in Perlane make it effective for larger wrinkles requiring a deeper injection. Perlane, like Restylane, adds fullness and volume to the skin.
Juvéderm – Multiple problem areas can be rejuvenated with Juvéderm, such as vertical lip lines, smile lines, and wrinkles. It is the only HA (hyaluronic acid) dermal filler that has received FDA approval as lasting up to a year.
Belotero – Like other HA fillers, Belotero treats facial wrinkles and folds, but it is formulated for use closer to the surface of the skin. It is excellent for superficial fine lines where the skin is thin, such as around the eyes and mouth.
There is no single right solution for every patient, the area to be treated, age and skin condition affect the choice of which product, or combination of products would be the best choice. In addition to our hyaluronic acid based fillers, we also offer Radiesse and Sculptra.
Radiesse – This water-based gel contains minuscule calcium microspheres, which are similar to naturally occurring minerals in our body. Radiesse adds fullness immediately, and stimulates the natural production of collagen, providing results lasting a year or more for many patients.
Sculptra – The main ingredient in this subtle treatment for shallow to deep facial folds and wrinkles is biocompatible poly-L-lactic acid. Sculptra provides subtle results that develop over time, rejuvenating your appearance gradually by helping replace lost collagen. Others will not know you have had an enhancement; they will just notice you are looking more youthful.
At Skin Wellness Center of Alabama, Dr. Hartman and Dr. Dyck cultivate a caring, trusting, lifelong relationship with each patient. They are concerned with the health and wellness of every patient’s skin, and provides a vast array of services to provide the very best for each person who walks through our door.Read more about Dermal Fillers in our Learn section >
Microdermabrasion is the process of removing the invisible layer of skin that sits on the surface and holds oil, debris and other particles that can contribute to a flawed complexion. With SilkPeel Dermalinfusion the solution doesn't just sit on top of your skin like a lotion or cream would. Rather the SilkPeel machine delivers vitamins, antioxidants and other ingredients deep into the skin where they are needed the most. The combination of formulations are absorbed deep down where they will be most effective in brightening, clarifying, and hydrating your skin. SilkPeel microdermabrasion enhances the benefits of exfoliation and the effects of the serums without the often uncomfortable and painful effects that people experience with other peels.
SilkPeel microdermabrasion is ideal for clarifying oily skin, jump-starting an acne regimen, evening skin tone, moisturizing dry patches, addressing fine lines and wrinkles or providing a brightening boost in preparation for a big social event. The procedure is relaxing and can be accomplished in an office visit. There is virtually no downtime and normal activities can be resumed immediately.
The best results are seen after a series of treatments spaced approximately one month apart. Many patients feel as though SilkPeel treatments are the best way to stay on top of acne, particularly after clearance has been achieved through other oral and topical medications. SilkPeel is also an excellent treatment when used in conjunction with chemical peels and laser treatments to correct sunspots and broken blood vessels.
SilkPeel is a soothing procedure that is not invasive. Positive results can be achieved without the use of chemicals that can cause discomfort. There is no downtime with SilkPeel. Your skin will be comfortable and free of irritation and inflammation. This wet exfoliation takes only about 30 minutes to leave you with silky, smooth, hydrated, bright and youthful skin.
Moles, medically known as nevi, typically appear as small brown spots, but they can be any one of a wide range of colors. They occur when cells, called melanocytes, grow in clusters instead of spreading out. Melanocytes cells are distributed throughout the basal cell layer of the epidermis and form melanin pigment, which gives skin its color.
Moles are common
Moles are extremely common skin growths, most adults have from 10 to 40 moles, and they can develop on virtually any part of the body. They may be flat or raised, and nearly color brown, black, pink, red, white, purple, blue, or flesh colored. Most moles are non-cancerous (benign), and no cause for concern. However, a mole can sometimes develop into melanoma, a dangerous form of skin cancer.
Moles should be checked for the ABCDEFGs of melanoma. If a mole is Asymmetrical, has an irregular Border, is varied in Color, has a Diameter larger than a #2 pencil eraser, is Evolving in color, shape or size, is very Firm, or is Growing, or is itching or bleeding, see Dr. Hartman or Dr. Dyck for an evaluation right away.
Cindy Crawford has a mole, and Marilyn Monroe had one. In the Renaissance era, they were thought of as beauty enhancers, but if a mole is unsightly or bothersome, it is worth having it removed. Madonna had a mole, and didn’t like the way it looked, so she had it removed. Benign moles can be removed easily with minimal risk of scarring thanks to modern techniques.
Leave it to a professional
If you have an unsightly mole, one of our dermatologists can remove it during an office visit. Some moles require two visits. Never try to remove a mole at home; it should be done by a dermatologist. If it contains cancer cells, they could spread, and even if it is benign, you could cause an infection, scar, or disfigurement. There are even creams that claim to remove moles, sometimes they work, but they can remove more than the mole, because they essentially burn a hole in your skin. In addition, you might miss the early warning signs of cancer. No matter what your skin concerns may be, our dermatologists have a safe, effective solution. Don’t take chances with your skin; turn to the medical professionals at Skin Wellness Center of Alabama.Read more about Mole Removal in our Learn section>

Latisse™ (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.03% is the first and only prescription treatment approved by the FDA for inadequate or insufficient eyelashes, growing them longer, fuller and darker. Latisse™ makes lash growth possible because of its active ingredient: bimatoprost. Latisse™ is a once-a-day at-home treatment you apply topically to the base of your upper eyelashes. Results are seen between 4 to 16 weeks after initiation of treatment.
Anytime the integrity of the skin surface has been cut, scratched, inflamed or injured a scar can form. The severity of the scar depends on many factors such as age, ethnic background, location of the injury, external influences and infection to name a few. Scar Revision involves the alternation or camouflage of the appearance of a scar. This technique of revising the scar does not permanently remove the existing scar. It only improves the appearance, thus making it less noticeable.
Dermaplaning is an exfoliation technique that uses a scalpel and gentle touch to abrade the skin with light feathering strokes to remove dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin. By removing these cells, trapped dirt and oil is dislodged and unwanted fine vellus hairs (“peach fuzz”) are also removed, revealing a more healthy glowing appearance.
After this procedure is performed, the appearance of fine lines is reduced and skin care products will be able to penetrate more readily into the deeper layers of the skin
Recent studies have found that uneven skin tone can make you look up to 10 years older. Although wrinkle treatments can reduce the signs of aging, dark spots, scars, and blemishes can thwart your efforts to achieve a more youthful appearance.
Complexion Blending is a combination of treatments designed to improve:
- Dark spots
- Uneven pigment
- Age spots
- Sun damage
- Mild scars
- Enlarged pores
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Blood vessels
A facial is a terrific way to care for your skin, especially when it is provided by one of our knowledgeable, experienced aestheticians. A facial exfoliates, cleans, and nourishes your skin, promoting a more youthful appearance with clear, well-hydrated skin. We offer a variety of facials and they all follow the same general steps.
- Consultation – To discuss your concerns, goals, medical conditions, medications and supplements, skin care products, etc.
- Cleansing – To protecting your hair and then thoroughly cleansing the skin.
- Analysis – Your skin is studied under a bright light to determine skin type and skin conditions.
- Steam – Depending on the type of facial, a gentle vapor of steam may be directed over your face to relax the skin and soften any blackheads or whiteheads to be extracted.
- Massage – To stimulate your facial muscles and skin, and relax you.
- Facial Mask – To apply a mask appropriate for your skin type and condition.
- Final – After the mask is removed, toner, serum, and moisturizer may be applied, along with sunscreen.
Waxing is one of the most popular methods of hair removal especially for lips, chin, and shaping the eyebrows. Waxing removes the hair from the root, so it takes much longer to grow back in.
Waxing is a great way to remove unwanted hair, however in some instances, an alternative form of hair removal may be recommended. Patients using Retin-A, Tazorac, Differin, or other topical retinoids should discuss this with the Aesthetician prior to scheduling an appointment.
Although there are many over the counter kits available for waxing at home, treatment by an experienced professional delivers safer, faster, and more effective results. Our Aestheticians have extensive training and practice in waxing. Waxing to remove hair is actually more complex than it may seem. Aestheticians understand how the hair grows, the proper temperature for the wax, how to prepare the skin for the waxing treatment, and how to treat it afterwards.
Although we do everything possible to make the treatment as comfortable as possible, there is some pain at the time of the wax removal. The pain is fleeting and an over the counter pain reliever prior to treatment can increase comfort.Read more about Skin Care & Protection in our Learn section >
Sclerotherapy, or ‘injection therapy’, is the most common treatment for spider and varicose veins on the legs. The treatment is performed by injecting a mild chemical solution directly into the spider veins on the legs or other area. The solution irritates the vessel walls, causing them to collapse. Over time, natural processes in the skin absorb the vein and blood is diverted to a healthy vein, maintaining proper circulation through the healthy blood vessel network in the area.
Typically, a touch up sclerotherapy session is necessary to retreat some vessels and to ensure that none were missed the first time. The touch up session usually takes place a few weeks after the first treatment. Some patients may require additional treatments, depending upon the number of veins treated, healing time and level of cosmetic improvement desired. During a sclerotherapy treatment session, multiple injections are necessary to perform the procedure. Patients describe the injections as feeling like bee stings, mosquito bites or pinpricks.
Prior to a treatment session, it is important to follow our instructions to ensure a successful treatment. Any medications or foods that may cause easy bleeding should be avoided. After a treatment, patients are asked to begin wearing compression stockings immediately and to continue to do so for one week. Prescriptions for compression stockings are typically written during the consultation visit. Normal daily activities can begin immediately after the treatment, although some restrictions will be in place to ensure the best cosmetic result.
Side effects of the treatment include: swelling, bruising, itching and occasionally hyperpigmentation. All of these are temporary and will resolve with time. The discomfort associated with the procedure lasts only as long as the procedure takes to perform, usually 20-30 minutes.
While there is a laser at Skin Wellness to treat veins, it is better used as an adjuvant treatment. Sclerotherapy remains the gold standard. Age revealing veins on the back of the hands can also be reduced with sclerotherapy.Read more about Vein Treatments in our Learn section>
